At Art for Akanksha, it is about the children and their fascination creative expression. It's about children who have really tough lives but still come to Art Class laughing and singing. It's about children who instinctively choose to use bright reds, blues and pinks even when they've had a rough day. It's about art and its wonderful way of allowing children to be spontaneous, free and in control of what they create.

The creativity in each art class manifests itself in bright and beautiful greeting cards, gifts bags and wrapping paper and other products. These products are individually designed by the children, who use a myriad hues to paints their favorite pictures - elephants, peacocks, fish and butterflies.

While half of their time is spent creating these wonderful products, the other half is spent learning through art. Art becomes the medium through which varied skills such as perception, observation and imaginative thinking are fostered. The children are taught basic artistic skills and introduced to a variety of different creative mediums. Children are also introduced to traditional art forms like Madhubani and Warli in an attempt to not just introduce them to works of various artists but encourage them to then explore their own versions of it.

All products made by the children are sold at various stalls through the year and are always available at our office. Part of the proceeds from the sale of these products is channeled back to the children who are provided with educational gifts at the end of every quarter. The remaining money goes back into funding Akanksha's education program. The Project also supplements the income of some of our kid's mothers who live in the slums and process the products into their final form and shape.
