Empowerment Program

The Akanksha Health program has both a preventive and curative side. On the preventive side, children are given an awareness of health issues, and these issues are also discussed in monthly parent meetings. On the curative side, any medical problems are identified directly in class, and Akanksha teachers and social workers do frequent follow-up checks. In addition, Akanksha conducts medical check-ups every six months and provides treatment when necessary.

“My husband was a drunkard but Azara use to come from the center and always spoke about the value lessons. It’s been 2 years and my husband hasn’t touched liquor. I hope my girls become like Didis and teach other children.” – Fatima Didi, mother

Akanksha counselors work to reduce aggressive behavior in the classroom by supporting teachers, parents and children. Individual children who require counseling are identified and counselors meet with them regularly. The counselors lead a support group for Akanksha teachers as well.

Akanksha works with the NGOs Avsar and Ummeed on medical and counseling projects.
