Lav Singh, 5

Lav Singh, 5, goes to Colaba Municipal School and is in the 1st standard. He is in level one, and has been with Akanksha for eight months.

Lav comes from the Cuffe Parade community. He lives with his parents and three sisters. Both his parents work and go to “office.” Two of his sisters also go to Akanksha.

Lav’s favorite part of the day is the bus ride. He says he really enjoys days when there is story telling. His favorite story is “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” Lav enjoys doing worksheets and this is why he prefers Akanksha to his formal school. His formal school doesn’t do fun things like worksheets. Now although he has been with Akanksha for a short while, he feels he has changed in many ways and one of things is that he can now speak in English. Lav says that now he studies at home, and when the house gets wet because of the rains and all the washing of clothes but he goes to his grandmother’s house to study. Earlier he would not do this, he would just not study, but now he knows it is important. His proudest moment is when Didi gave him a star on his hand, and this was because he had finished his worksheet and it was entirely correct.

Madhu Tiwari, 7

Madhu Tiwari, 7, goes to Colaba Municipal School and is in class 3. She is in level 1 and has been with Akanksha for eight months.

Madhu comes from the Cuffe Parade community. She lives with her parents and older sister. Her mother is a housewife and her father is a driver.

Delnaz Didi says that bright Madhu has a strong educational foundation. She understands her basic concepts and values very well. She is a very confident child and always performs well. She loves coming to Akanksha and enjoys herself when she is at class.

Madhu joined Akanksha by accident. Didi and Bhaiya had come to her friend Rima’s house to talk about Akanksha and her mother happened to be there also. She decided to put Madhu in Akanksha as well. Madhu prefers Akanksha to her formal school because in Akanksha the Didi teaches well and they also teach English. Madhu’s favourite day at the center was Rakhi Day. The entire class made Rakhis and then received chocolates. She made blue Rakhis and took them home to tie to her brothers. Her proudest moment has been when she received 8/8 in her spelling test. Her favorite song is “Salted Peanuts” and she will willingly sing it with all the actions if you ask her. She also enjoys drawing and writing and wants to be a Doctor when she grows up.
