“I want to be a scientist when I grow up, because they make new things. I will make a robot to do all my work at home. And while he does the work, I will watch TV and do my drawings”
- Nasreen

Our Goals for our children:

  1. All children must complete college
  2. They must be able to decide and understand what is best for them.
  3. The children must have values. They must learn to be responsible, caring, respectful and helpful.
Our children are learning:
  1. Spoken English
  2. Math
  3. Grammar
  4. Values

Our Favorite Thinking Questions are:
1. “What is one thing you would like to change about your Didi or bhaiya?”
She should wear an Akanksha t-shirt
She must give easy worksheets

2. A man walked into a restaurant and asked for a glass of water. The waiter showed him a gun. The man drank the glass of water, tipped the person Rs. 100 and walked out smiling. What happened?
- The man spat the water on the waiter’s face and took the gun.
- The man was smiling as the money was fake.

The Rain – written by the CM1 kids after the floods in Mumbai

The rains came down
The water came around
And many people drowned

Cows and buffaloes lost their lives
And many a man lost his wife.

Snakes came out to bite
And gave others a fright.

Hundreds were stranded
And planes never landed.

Strangers were helpful
And others were grateful.

Arman Saha, 8

Arman Saha, 8, goes to Guru Naka School and is in the 3rd standard. He attends the Colaba Market Municipal School and has been with Akanksha for 2 years.

Arman lives in Murti Nagar community. He lives with his parents, an older sister, older brother, a younger brother and a younger sister. His younger brother also goes to Akanksha. His father works in a small shop.
Nikki Didi says that Arman is a very bright student. He applies everything that has been taught to him. He is a focused child. She thinks his educational foundation is fairly strong. Although he is clever, he has low confidence. He will not always answer in class. He knows his work, but he needs that extra push. He is very responsible and understands good values very well. He definitely enjoys himself, as he is also a very regular student.

His favorite day at Akanksha was one day when Didi took them to the Nehru Planetarium. Here he saw many things including sun, stars, moon, rockets and even an astronaut. He really enjoyed that day as “I saw many new things, which I will never forget”. His proudest moment is when Didi praised his English homework in front of the entire class. Arman enjoys doing Maths at Akanksha. He wants to be a Doctor when grows up.

“I like my new center Mahalaxmi 1. The room is big. We get lot of place to study. I liked the “special seat” the most. I spoke on my best friend Heena. She is very pretty. Everybody clapped for me after I finished it. My favorite time in my center is when I play with Stern blocks in math. I know them well.”

Nasreen Sheikh, 9

Nasreen Sheikh, 9, goes to Guru Naka School and is in class 4. She attends the Colaba Market Municipal School center and has been with Akanksha for 2 years.

Nasreen lives with her parents and 3 older brothers. When asked what her father does Nasreen says, “he thinks of ideas for buildings and gets them built!!”

Nikki didi says that Nasreen has tremendous potential as a student to excel. She understands concepts when told once. She just needs to focus more and she can do better. She is extremely confident and outgoing. She participates a lot in class. Didi says she full of energy and is very enthusiastic – “she has a blast.” As for her values she is very honest and respectful to other people.

Nasreen says she likes her school and Akanksha because both places teach her and she loves to study. She enjoys drawing, especially animals and birds and her Didi told her that she would be in art class next year, which she is very excited about. “I did well in my assessment and Didi moved me to level 4. I was proud”
