“Right now, my children’s dreams are small. But that is immaterial. What is important for me is that they realize that they can dream! It is my duty to make them dream big! I want them to believe in themselves”- Geeta Didi

Our Favorite song:
I have a dream, a song to sing,
To help me cope with anything
If you see the wonder of a fairy tale
You can take the future even if you fail
I believe in angels
Something good in everything I see
I believe
To help me through reality
And my destination, makes it worth the while
Through the darkness, still another mile
I believe in angles
When I know the time is right for me
I cross the stream, I have a dream
I have a dream

Our Goals for our children:

  1. Think big, Dream
  2. Belief in self
  3. Be Independent

Some of the things we are learning:

  1. Blend words
  2. Basic grammar
  3. Simple sentences
  4. 3 digit addition and subtraction
  5. Multiplication

Our favorite thinking questions are:

If you turned smaller, the size of a thumb, what would you do?
Some answers were:

  1. I would go make friends with mice so they would not bite me!
  2. I would go piggy riding on people’s shoes and save energy!
  3. I would get into an ice-cream box or chocolate box and eat away merrily!

If you melted in rain, how would you feel? What would you be re-born as?
I would be happy, for I wouldn’t have to face my tuition teacher’s wrath and cane! I would then be a sun and scorch him up by looking down upon him!

Programs and Special Events:

  1. We are part of Art Class
  2. Our centre was selected to be part of Open Day
  3. Students from Australia came to observe and interact with us.

Sabista Sheikh, 7

Sabista Sheikh, 7, goes to the Worli Naka School and is in class 3. She is at level 3 in the Mahalaxmi 1 center and has been in Akanksha for a year now.

Sabista comes from the Lotus community in Worli. She lives with her mother, father and sister. Her father works at a garage.

Geeta Didi says Sabista has a strong education foundation. She used to be in another Akanksha center and the teacher there thought she was very smart. She is only 7 but is already at level 3. She takes her time to answer questions, as she is very soft-spoken and shy. Her English is stronger than her Math. She is extremely well behaved, and never fights. Geeta Didi says that she is mature for her age. She enjoys herself thoroughly at the center.

Sabista remembers the day when Didi took them to the zoo. She saw a baby monkey stuck to her mother monkey and found it very funny. Didi gave them biscuits while they were there and she enjoyed the outing very much. She feels proud when Didi asks for her help in class, like one time when she had to collect everybody’s books and hand them over to Didi. She prefers Akanksha to her formal school because “one day Vikas Bhaiya had sent a bumper prize” for the students. “There aren’t so many exciting events and activities happening at the other school and the Didi at Akanksha teach well also”, she says.

“I like my new center Mahalaxmi 1. The room is big. We get lot of place to study. I liked the “special seat” the most. I spoke on my best friend Heena. She is very pretty. Everybody clapped for me after I finished it. My favorite time in my center is when I play with Stern blocks in math. I know them well.”

Mohammad Faiz, 12

Mohammad Faiz, 12, goes to the Worli Naka School and is in class 5. He is at level 3 in Mahahlaxmi 1 center and this is his second year at Akanksha. Faiz is also a part of the sports program, which he loves to attend.

Faiz comes from the Lotus community in Worli. He lives with is parents and two brothers. His father does not have a stable job. His younger brother attends the same center as him.

Geeta Didi says that Faiz is an average student. He is definitely making an attempt to study. He has a short attention span and he tends to fidget a lot. However she feels that he has lots of potential. He can do well if he wants to. He is already making an effort and trying to be more respectful. He likes coming to Akanksha and overall has a good time in class.

Faiz was very proud of himself when he received a star for behaving well. He prefers Akanksha to his formal school because they don’t hit the students here. After being with Akanksha for a while now, he has changed in many ways, he has learnt about keeping the roads clean and how not to spit. He not only stops himself, but also tells other not to do so.

“I like it here. I learn new, new things here. The room is big, but it is broken at so many places. My favorite day in center is Friday, because it is day when we draw a lot. The next 2 days is holiday.”
