Rahul Patil, 10

Rahul Patil, 10, goes to Holy Name High School and is in class 5. He has been with Akanksha for 5 years now. He has been a part of the Dance as well as the Art class.

Rahul comes from the Cuffe Parade community. He lives with his grandmother, parents and younger brother and sisters. Both his other siblings also attend Akanksha centers. His mother is a housewife, and his father is a fisherman.

Dimple Didi says that Rahul is a very bright student. He goes to an English medium school and sometimes because of that he gets too confident. However he is an academically oriented student and does his work well. He is very helpful to his peers and is always ready to take on responsibility. He enjoys studying. He has been chosen for the Learning to Lead program

One of the interesting things that his center had done was a day when all the students had to cook. Food items were brought in and the children were divided in groups. They had to put the stuff together and come up with a dish. Rahul says this was his favourite day. His team made a “bean salad” which he was very proud of. They didn’t win a prize but the judge – Radhika Didi did say that his was one of the best. He says there was too much salt in their salad and that’s the reason he didn’t win. He prefers Akanksha to his formal school as the Didi’s at Akanksha do not scream or hit the students. Rahul has become more confident after joining Akanksha. He started speaking much better English in just about a month and he was also promoted from level 1 to level 3. His proudest moment is when he was selected for LTL.

Jyoti Maruti Godke, 12

Jyoti Maruti Godke, 12, goes to Colaba Municipal School and is in class 5. She has been coming to Akanksha for 3 years. She has completed the art class.

Jyoti lives in the Cuffe Parade community with her parents and three siblings. Her younger sister also goes to Akanksha. Her mother is a housewife and her father works with cement for construction.

Dimple Didi says Jyoti is a very shy girl. She is not very strong academically. But she does well with attention, and concentrates well so she can learn. Her confidence is not very high, but with time it should grow. Overall she has good time in class and likes coming to Akanksha.

Jyoti’s favourite day at Akanksha was when Didi took the out to see a film – “Godhu and Chinto.” It was a comedy and she really enjoyed the film. Didi also gave them pencils, wafers and chocolate that day. It was a fun day for all the students and she had a good time. She feels she has become more confident after coming to Akanksha. At first, she didn’t know much and was scared to go up to the blackboard and write. She was afraid she wouldn’t know the answer or the other children might laugh at her. But now she actually volunteers to go up in front of the class, and is proud of that. Once her class had a fun day at Akanksha where the students got to imitate their teachers. She imitated Mubarak Didi and she won a prize that day. She was very proud that day. Her mother says she should be a Nurse when she grows up but she wants to be a Doctor. She knows it requires a lot of studies and is going to work very hard towards it.
