This is our center song:

We wanna reach the stars
We wanna reach the stars!
It’s gonna take a lot of grit,
But we’re gonna do it bit by bit!
We have Didis and Bhaiyas to guide us,
And no reason to make a fuss!
We’re gonna reach the stars,
We’re gonna reach the stars!
There’s nothing that is impossible,
And nothing is unattainable!
We’ll surely make it to the stars,
We’ll surely make it to the stars!

Our three goals are:

  1. Self – discipline
  2. Strong English
  3. Applying the values we learn

Swapna Moghe

Swapna joined Akanksha in 1999, and is in level 3. She lives with her parents, grandparents, one brother and one sister. Her parents do not have a steady income. She faces domestic fights and problems at home but never seems to lose her focus on her studies.

Swapna is a bright, confident child. She finishes her work faster than the rest of the kids. She helps the slower kids in their work and also helps Didi in many things.
Swapna is willing to accept challenges. At the Akanksha AGM, she compared the program along with her Didi. Though she was nervous to go up and speak on stage, she did it. She would get up early morning to memorize her script, because during the day she would be busy helping her mother in housework.

Swapna wants to improve her speaking skills and wants to go and speak on stage again.

Sharada Chidam

Sharada joined Akanksha in 2001. She is the only child of her parents who had her after 7 years of marriage. Her parents realized from the beginning that Sharada was a slow learner.

Her father is a plumber and her mother a domestic worker. Both are very co-operative. They have always had full faith in their Didis and Bhaiyas at Akanksha, even when Sharada had to repeat a level. They encourage other parents to co-operatate with Akanksha.

Sharada has been a regular child. She used to be very quiet in class and was very low on self-confidence. She would sit though the entire class with a blank look. With individual attention given to her especially by volunteers, Sharada has come out of her shell. She speaks basic sentences in English and does not hesitate in coming up to Didi and asking for help.

She took part in ‘Sunshine Stars’. Despite having high fever she came for all the shows and performed on stage in front of a big audience. With time, she shows progress and increased confidence.
