    Monica Gopal Kamage, 8

Monica Gopal Kamage, 8, goes to Ganpatrao, Kadam Marg School and is in class 3. She has been with Akanksha for 2 and half years now.
Monica comes from the Siddharth Nagar community. She lives with her parents and three sisters. Her younger sister also goes to Akanksha. Her mother goes to a household and cleans vessels for them. Her father goes to office.

Yesha Didi says that she has been teaching Monica for only about 3 months, but she is a very bright student. She is a very creative girl and is excellent at drawing, painting and colouring. One incident really surprised Didi and made her realise how much Monica loves coming to Akanksha. Monica was pushed by on of her siblings near her house and she had an injury on her head. Her mother told Didi that with all this pain, she was still persistent to come to Akanksha. Didi says that she always wants to be first in everything and is a very confident child. When praised, she gets motivated and wants to do better. She is always smiling.

Monica prefers going to Akanksha than her formal school because ‘the Didi at Akanksha teaches well”. She likes learning from the Didi because she is nice to all students and always helps them. Her favourite day at Akanksha was when Didi took them to the garden. The best part of the outing was that they all got to sit in a car. All the students played and had a lot of fun that day. There was a swing and slide, which was a major attraction for most kids, and for Monica it was a sure delight. She wants to be a “Didi” when she grows up. She already feels responsible as she feeds her younger sister who is three, and then does her homework. Monica feels very proud every time Didi praises her and says “very good Monica.”

    Jyotsna Gopal Naidu, 6

Jyotsna Gopal Naidu, 6, goes to Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar School and is in class 3. She has been with Akanksha for a year now.

Jyotsna comes from the BDD chawl community. She lives with a family of fourteen people, which include her grandparents, maternal grandmother, parents 2 brothers and other cousins. Her mother works as a domestic worker at someone’s house. Her father goes to office.

Rupa Didi says that her educational foundation is very strong because of that. She understands concepts well and remembers them also. She is always the first to finish her work and then promptly waits to find ways in which she can help Didi like collecting material or handing out pencils. Initially she was not very confident and would hardly raise her hand to answer questions. However now she is very lively and always wants to answer in class. She is very well behaved and cheerful and is missed by Didi whenever absent.

Jyotsna remembers a day at Akanksha when Didi took them to a picnic and they went to the zoo. She had fun watching the animals especially the elephant. Didi also gave them some snacks and she seemed to really enjoy that day. She is proud of the fact that she takes care of her younger sister who is 3. She feeds her and only then does her homework.
