The Learning to Lead Program identifies those children from Akanksha who have the potential for leadership and excellence and instills in them a sense of purpose and determination to succeed by providing them with intensive academic and leadership opportunities.

The program, inspired by Prep for Prep Inc. (NYC), takes students through seven years of intensive study. Each year a new batch of up around 10 students is selected. Students spend four hours in the program every day, studying through the academic year and even more intensively in the vacation periods. Classes are small, interactive and designed to challenge the children. LTL students are transferred to private schools, helped with extra classes and encouraged to become role models for other Akanksha students. The final objective of the program is for LTL students to graduate as role models who have made a huge leap not only in their own lives but have also effected change in the society in which they live.

The LTL child is Learning to Lead

  • Intensive leadership training each summer
  • Leadership retreats
  • Guest speaker leaders come in

“The kids have a packed schedule with school, center, tuitions and other activities, yet they continue to work hard with the sole motive of realizing their dreams. Yes, there are times when they get distracted or face hurdles, but, like true leaders they have learnt to take the problems in their stride, get up and keep going.”- Poorvi didi

Our center song:

Reach

People look at us
And in us place your trust
You ain’t seen the best of us yet
Give us time, our goals are just being set.
We have faith in us
And still more to focus
We can catch the moon and the stars
As we learn who we are
We’ll go far
Reach

We’re gonna try forvever
We’re gonna learn how to fly
high
All of us workin’ together
We’ll never stop askin’ why
Reach

We’re gonna make it to college
With all that we learn as you teach
Reach
We’re gonna try forever
With you behind us we’ll Reach

We’ll listen
We’ll try hard
We’ll ask why
We’ll solve how
We’ll act now
We’ll achieve
We will reach.

People look at us….

We’re gonna try forever…..(2)

An insight into our LTL students:

Krishnamurthy:
In the morning I go to school, then LTL then to Bhola’s classes. I come home at 9:15. I directly eat, do little work and then study till 11:30 to 12:00. But my siblings don’t understand what my daily routine is. I try to tell them and promise them that I will help them in some ways.

Chandrakant :
The biggest problem that my family faces is a finance problem. I am not able to take part in school activities or cannot go for picnics. I try not to use money for my things. I cannot buy new clothes very easily.

Shameer:
It’s hard to sacrifice my playtime and take our time to study and score well in my exams. I am making my playtime short and trying to study.

Azim :
My father’s backbone is hurt. He has not been working. So that’s why we don’t have money, but we try. We went to many different hospitals but nothing happened. They used to say that you have to do an operation. Then my father went to the village for a month. After wards, he came here and he went to the hospital one more time. Now he feels better and he goes to work some times, but he cannot do heavy work. Sometimes when I think of this, I get very worried and cannot focus on my studies.

Selva :
My biggest problem is that in our community they spit everywhere and it affects our life. One more problem that children need a bathroom because they do bathroom on the road and when whey the flies sit on it we can get diseases from that and one biggest problem is that we have a gutter and no one is cleaning the gutter because of that we will get jaundice.

Rubina:
In my life love is the most important thing because without love we cannot do even one thing in our life.
