Professional Developmentt

It is commonly recognized that an improvement in school leadership can drive dramatic improvement in student learning and achievement outcomes. This finding, as well as the significant changes and new challenges faced by those transitioning from the role of a teacher to that of a school leader, highlight the need for professional training/development support for those making this transition. Not only does Akanksha conduct extensive professional development with its center teachers, but the organization has developed specific programs to train teachers in Akanksha schools.

The School Leadership Institute
In 2007, leveraging years of experience in running educational programs in Mumbai and Pune, Akanksha initiated The School Leadership Institute to support the schools that were being launched as part of The School Project. The Institute ran as an in-service professional development program for Akanksha school leaders (principals) as well as a few external participants who sought to run schools in different parts of the country. With the Institute’s success in preparing Akanksha’s School Leaders for the challenges and achievements that lay ahead in building their schools, combined with Akanksha’s identified need for qualified school leaders to manage its future schools, the organization decided to expand the School Leadership Institute (SLI) to Akanksha teachers and staff interested in pursuing school leadership as well as new school leaders who have not undergone this training before. The SLI will fulfill Akanksha’s need for high quality leaders to lead its growing number of schools and will also serve to develop effective leaders who will lead existing schools or start new schools in areas of need.
