Our volunteers and mentors become role models and friends to all Akanksha students, often times finding themselves becoming more and more involved with Akanksha as the years progress.


I love to interact with children and the teachers I was assisting. Maria and Naheeda were brilliant and extremely approachable. The best part of volunteering with Akanksha was the one-on-one sessions I had with a student. I learned a lot while teaching and this process gave me an insight into the personality of the student and how to accommodate another person. It gave me a sense of purpose and satisfaction working directly with a student. I also really admired the culture that Akanksha has created at the school. Apart from that, I observed that the faculty, collectively and otherwise, was very involved with each and every student of this school.

I think the best thing is the challenges I have had to face when teaching tough kids who come with their own stories to tell, and how it has been different with each one of them. Sometimes the joy lies in being able to put a point across, which the child understands, or seeing your hard work in the improvement of a child. Sometimes it is just the unconditional love of the kids which makes me want to give it my all.

Those interested can attend our Volunteer Orientation Sessions that are held as follows:
Mumbai at the Voltas Office at 5 PM on the First and Third Friday of every month (except public holidays)
Pune at the Thermax Office at 4 P.M. every Thursday


Mentoring in Mumbai

Akanksha has collaborated with DSP Merrill Lynch, ICICI, Voltas Ltd., J.M. Financial, Mastek Foundation and the RPG Group to establish mentoring groups. Individual mentors from various organizations have also volunteered.

If you or your organization is interested in collaborating with Akanksha for the Mentor Program, which requires 8-10 mentors who are willing to volunteer two hours every week as a group, please get in touch.
